SWEET

Ollie: Bob played me the main riff to this song at one of our first get-togethers and I loved it straight away. But no matter how much we worked on it the song as a whole didn't seem to quite work for ages. First my bass lines weren't working and after we had sorted them out we couldn't get a decent vocal melody. It came very close to being discarded altogether. Instead we left it on the back boiler for a few weeks and when we came back to it everything just seemed to fall into place. For that alone it holds a special place in my heart! It is our longest song so far and probably the most complicated.

Bob: I came up with the original riff to this song early in 1995 not long after splitting up with a girlfriend. I wrote the music for the Chorus and the 'So Tired ...' bits back then. They didn't quite follow the arrangement they do now though. I had some lyrics for this song but they didn't do much for me. I remember playing the original version of 'Sweet' to Ollie in the summer of 1996 one evening when we were watching some videos. Ollie loved the riff so he persisted with me to develop the song when Flume was formed. It was a bit of a rollercoaster song as some weeks the song would sound great and the next it wouldn't. We nearly ditched the song but once Ollie had written some new words and a new vocal melody I was convinced the song was going to be well worth keeping. 'Sweet' has the been the song that has taken the longest to write so far.
